Missing X Omission: re-centring the Black perspective in therapy. Global perspectives on race, racism, music, and music education

Join us for a timely and thought provoking discussion with our Founder Cerrita Smith, Music Therapist, EMDR Therapist, and Organisational Consultant, and an all-black panel of Therapists from across the world, exploring Race, Racism, Black Identity, and Culture in Therapy and Music Education.

Hosted by BBC1xtra Radio Broadcaster and Presenter, Richie Brave, panellists will explore personal and professional experiences from their Therapy practice and training, giving consideration to:

- Race, racism, and identity in the training course experience

- The need for increased Black representation in the therapy profession

- The colonial hierarchy in higher education (and music education more broadly) and its impact

- Working with mental health and racial trauma in therapy within healthcare institutions

- The role of music and creativity in mental health and wellbeing

The event will combine a lively panel discussion and will be followed by an extended Q&A supporting all in attendance to in taking discussions forward. The discussion will be preceded with a performance by the acclaimed soprano Rachel Duckett, who made her BBC Proms debut this year. She will be performing a BBC Radio 3 commissioned composition by Ella Jarman-Pinto. We would like to thank Acquire SLT for sponsoring the Musicians at the event.

Black Women's Healing Circle

This event is a safe space for Black women to come together, share stories, and support one another. The healing circle will be focussed on healing from work experiences. The theme will be on labour and emotional labour: the load that we carry and the load(s) that we are given. We will share, empower, and uplift each other.
